Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Rose Bradford (Secretary); Sir William Crookes (Foreign Secretary); James Cossar Ewart; Sir David Gill; John Scott Haldane; Charles Thomas Heycock; Alfred Bray Kempe (Treasurer); Horace Lamb; Joseph Larmor (Secretary); Hector Munro MacDonald; Dr Frederick Walker Mott; Charles Algernon Parsons; William Henry Perkin; Edward Bagnall Poulton; Lieutenant-Colonel David Prain; Sir Arthur W. Rücker; Sir James Stirling; Frederick Thomas Trouton; William Whitaker; the President, Sir Archibald Geikie, in the Chair. The Assistant Secretary [Robert Harrison] attended.

Among matters discussed or noted:

1. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed.
2. Secretary reported death of George Gore, Harry Govier Seeley, and Francis Elgar. Obiturary notices appointed to John Henry Poynting, Arthur Smith Woodward, and Sir William White respectively.
3. Frederick Frost Blackman appointed Chair of the Sectional Committee for Botany in place of Francis Darwin.
4. Alexander Siemens and W.F. Reid appointed to the General Board of the National Physical Laboratory in place of R. Kaye Gray and Mr. Tyrer.
5. Arthurt Schuster appointed representative of Society at 350th Anniversary of the University of Geneva.
6. The President to represent the Society at the 500th Anniversary of the University of Leipzig.
7. Scheme for the administration of the Schuster Travelling Expenses Fund approved and to be printed. Overview of scheme entered into minutes.
8. Grant of £10 to be made to Mineralogical Society for publication of Henry Clifton Sorby's paper.
Dr. Davison's application for £100 in aid of publication of "A History of British Earthquakes" denied.
Grant of £100 to be made to Dr. W.S. Bruce in aid of publication of scientific expeditions of the Scottish Antarctic Expedition.
9. Application from Prof. Beattie for grant of £250 to equip an expedition for magnetic observations from South Africa to the Nile referred to Government Grant Board B.
10. Trust to be created by Henry Clifton Sorby's will with a sum of £15,000 for the establishment of a professorship or fellowship for original scientific research with a preference to Sheffield University.
11. Nominations for three Foreign Members to be considered.
12. Government Grant Committee to meet on 17 March and Government Grant Boards to meet on 3 March.
13. Letter from the Home Office (Ernley Blackwell) approving a grant of £500 to prevent cataract among glass workers. Full text entered into minutes.
14. Report from the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee. Entered into minutes.
15. President authorised to sign an instrument appointing the Right Hon. Alfred Lyttelton as Trustee of the Lawes Agricultural Trust in place of Sir John Evans.
16. Letter from Board of Trade thanking the Society for offer of rooms for the International Conference on Electrical Units and Standards and for the use of the Library to Delegates.
17. Receipt of donation of £50 from N. Story Maskelyne towards publications.
18. Letter from James Thomson Bottomley regarding manuscripts containing mathematical and engineering designs by Leonardo da Vinci, forwarded to the Society by Lady Kelvin. Accepted with thanks and full text entered into minutes.
19. Receipt of £2,000 from Ludwig Mond, final instalment of £6,000, towards completion of the Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers.
20. Permission granted to photograph the original mask of Isaac Newton as an illustration for a book by George Forbes.
21. Permissions to editors and others for purposes of re-printing and illustrations.
22. List of bills for payment for paper, engravings, printings, subscriptions, repairs, and for accountants' fees.
