Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Rose Bradford (Secretary); Sir William Crookes (Foreign Secretary); Sir George Darwin; James Cossar Ewart; Sir David Gill; John Scott Haldane; Charles Thomas Heycock; Alfred Bray Kempe (Treasurer); Horace Lamb; Joseph Larmor (Secretary); Hector Munro MacDonald; Dr Frederick Walker Mott; William Henry Perkin; Edward Bagnall Poulton; Lieutenant-Colonel David Prain; Sir Arthur W. Rücker; Sir James Stirling; Frederick Thomas Trouton; William Whitaker; the President, Sir Archibald Geikie, in the Chair. The Assistant Secretary [Robert Harrison] attended.

Among matters discussed or noted:

1. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed as correct.
2. Secretaries reported death of Arthurt Gamgee. Obituary notice appointed to Sir Lauder Brunton.
3. Letter from Alfred Fernandez Yarrow to the Director of the National Physical Laboratory, Dr. Glazebrook, regarding the proposed establishment of an Experimental Tank at Bushy. Full text entered into minutes. Response from Secretaries J. Larmor and John Rose Bradford to Yarrow approved. Full text entered into minutes.
4. Letter from General Artamanoff, Chief of the Topographic Section of the État-Major, St. Petersburg, regarding the damaged condition of the 2.5 metre standard returned by the Society after its use by the British South Africa Company. Response to be sent with regret, assuring the correct procedures in safe packaging and an accompanying comparison with the standard from the National Physical Laboratory.
5. Seal of the Society fixed to diplomas for election of Foreign Members on 25 March.
6. Letter from Captain Henry George Lyons on behalf of the Egyptian Survey Department advising on limitations to Prof. Beattie's magnetic survey in upper region of the Nile. Resolved - amount of expenditure left to Prof. Beattie.
7. Application from R.F. Scharff for a grant of £50 in aid of the Natural History Survey of Clare Island, Co. Mayo. Granted.
8. Letter from the Solicitors of the Royal Institution regarding deductions to George Gore's estate to fund a headstone at his grave. Approved.
9. Report from the Scientific Relief Committee entered into minutes. Recommendations referred to consideration of Sir Arthurt Rücker and Sir James Stirling.
10. Request from the Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society to reprint abstracts of astronomical papers and the Note on Mathematical Printing. Granted.
11. Circular letter from the Corresponding Societies Committee of the British Association regarding proposed application for a Government Scientific Publication Fund.
12. Telegram of congratulations sent by President to Lieutenant Shackleton on the success of his Antarctic Expedition.
13. Report of the National Physical Laboratory and Statement of Accounts to be forwarded to HM Treasury.
14. Receipt of £4,000 from HM Treasury for credit of the Account of the National Physical Laboratory.
15. Accountant's certificate regardomg the Government Grant accounts. Full text entered into minutes.
16. Request from the Charity Commission for information on exact amounts and classes of stock acquired with Henry Clifton Sorby's bequest of £15,000. Response sent.
17. Letter from the Colonial Office, dated 15 April 1909, enclosing a copy of a Minute of the Privy Council of Canada regarding reasons preventing the grant of facilities to Dr. G.H. Fowler for his proposed expedition.
18. Permissions granted to Editor of 'Nature' for illustrations of Sir Norman Lockyer's 'Notes on Observations of Sun and Stars in some British Stone Circles'.
19. List of bills for payment for paper, engravings, books, and coal and lighting.
