Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Reverend James Booth; Benjamin Collins Brodie; Charles Brooke; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Peter Gassiot; Thomas Graham; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Hopkins; Henry Bence Jones; George Newport; Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Ellison Portlock; William Sharpey; Nathaniel Wallich; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Communication from Edward Sabine and Charles Richard Weld, Royal Society, 20 October 1853, full text entered into the minutes: noting that the standard yard and pound to be deposited with the Royal Society by the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, delivered by George Biddell Airy, were examined by Sabine and Weld an found to agree with the schedule. Receipt, signed by Edward Sabine and Charles Richard Weld, Royal Society, 20 October 1853, full text entered into the minutes: noting the receipt of the standard yard and pound from George Biddell Airy, with the schedule describing both objects and their containers in detail. Letter from W.A. Hamilton, Admiralty, 17 October 1853, to Samuel Hunter Christie, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing papers in relation to glass bottles found on the coast of the sea of Kara, with a specimen glass bottle: requesting the Society's assitsance in discovering the use andpurposes of the objects; a committee was created to address this question. Letter from John Peter Gassiot, Kew Observatory, 24 October 1853, to Samuel Hunter Christie, full text entered into the minutes: sending a statement of expenditure of grant [used in balloon ascents] noting that the instruments used by Mr. Welsh have been repaired and are now deposited in the Observatory as belonging to the Royal Society; with a list of the expenses including payments for ascents made to Charles Green. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the candidates were discussed. Mr. Jukes applied for an extension of time for his admission to the Fellowship, granted.
