DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Reverend James Booth; Samuel Hunter Christie; Warren De La Rue; Thomas Henry Huxley; Henry Bence Jones; George Newport; John Phillips; Reverend Baden Powell; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. John Phillips made and subscribed to the Decalation in lieu of the oath, as a new Member of Council. Resolved that a Council would be held on 23 March, to consider the list of candidates for election to the Fellowship. Letter from Dr. Noad, regarding his certificate of candidature: Mr. Weld was directed to draw Noad's attention to Chapter 1 Section 5 of the Statutes. The Foreign Secretary reported that there were three vacancies on the list of Foreign Members: the matter would be taken up at the next meeting. Resolved that in order to give early and wide circulation to scientific information, Proceedings should be posted to every Fellow free, and to other ersons on payment of a subscription. Letter from the executors of the late Mr. Bate: referrde to a committee formed for the purpose. Resolved that the Royal Society should pay income tax on the salaries of the Officers who are not Fellows of the Society. Mr. Wollaston Blake applied for copies of the Philosophical Transactions for the last five years, the request granted. Letter from Robert Grant, 40 Hemingford Terrace, Islington, 6 March 1854, to the Secretray of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: requesting permission to use the archives, in research relating to astronomy in the seventeenth century, the request granted.
