DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Reverend James Booth; Warren De La Rue; Thomas Graham; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Henry Bence Jones; William Sharpey; Admiral William Henry Smyth; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from the President, the Earl of Rosse, regarding his intention of resigning the Presidency at the close of the present year: resolved that an application should be made to Lord Wrottesley, requesting that he would allow his nominaton to the Presidency. Letter from J.E. Gray, requesting permission to use woodcuts from his paper on chitons, granted. A sealed paper was received from M. George Ville of Paris, and was deposited in the Treasurer's strongbox. The selection of candidates for the Fellowship was discussed and adjourned. List of candidates for selection as Foreign Members of the Royal Society was proposed. Communication from the Office of Works, requesting the use of part of the vaults: the Secretary to reply that the Royal Society woulde prepared to give up the whole of the aprtments as soon as they are supplied with accomodation which had been the subject of an application to H.M. Government. Dr. Hooker communicated resolutions of Council of the Geological Society, on a committe to confer with other Societies in applying to Government to organise a scientific commission to accompnay the British Army to the East.
