DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; the Reverend James Booth; Samuel Hunter Christie; Warren De La Rue; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Henry Bence Jones; John Phillips; Sir Frederick Pollock; the Reverend Baden Powell; Admiral William Henry Smyth; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved that the Chairman be requested to communicate further with Lord Wrottesley. Mr. Grove gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that no further sealed packets should be retained by the Royal Society. Letter from James C. Melvill, East India House, 30 March 1854, to Samuel Hunter Christie, full text entered in to the minutes: sending a letter and enclosure from Adolphe Schlagintweit, describing his proposed operations in completing the magnetic survey of India, and requesting Council's observations on these; resolved that the reply should express satisfaction in this completion of Captain Elliott's work; a sub-committee to be formed to consider Schlaintweit's proposals. Colonel Sabine's paper having been selected for the Bakerian Lecture last year, he was authorised to deliver another paper viva voce, on the understanding that it should not interfere with the Bakerian for this year. List of six Fellows elected to the Government Grant Committee. List of bills for payment, for printing, paper, and binding. Letter from George Biddell Airy, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 8 April 1854, to Colonel Edward Sabine, full text entered into the minutes: referring to the set of standards deposited with the Royal Society, giving a value for the standard of weight in grains. Applications were made by Commander Kay and Mr. Wilson for copies of the Philosphical Transactions for the last five years, granted. Dr. Martin Barry applied on behalf of Dr. Keber, for permission to reproduce plates from Barry's paper on embryology, granted.
