DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; the Reverend James Booth; Warren De La Rue; Captain Robert Fitzroy; Thomas Graham; Henry Bence Jones; John Phillips; the Reverend Baden Powell; William Sharpey; Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from James Wilson, Treasury Chambers, 15 September 1854, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: transmitting a report of the Commissioners of Inland Revenue, on the memorial of Mr. R. Bate, requesting payment of £157 16s. 10d. alleged to be owed to his late father, Mr. R.B. Bate, for making certain experiments; Council's opinion on the validity of the claim is sought. Resolved that the Commissioners be informed that the Royal Society had received a similar claim which was referred to a sub-committee; their report was that the claim should not be entertained and that was communicated to the Treasury. Letter from Dr. R.G. Latham, requesting permission for the London Committee of the Subscribers to the Newton Monument to meet in the Royal Society's apartments, granted. Letter from Captain Chapman, requesting permission to withdraw from the Royal Society, granted. Letter from Dr. Silvester askig to make copy of his paper on the typical form of the viscera, granted. Dr. Neil Arnott added to the names of candidates for the Rumford Medal, for his invention of a smokeless fire grate. M. Foucault added to the list of candidates for the Copley Medal.
