DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: the Reverend James Booth; Warren De La Rue; Thomas Graham; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Henry Bence Jones; Sir Frederick Pollock; the Reverend Baden Powell; William Sharpey; Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; Charles Wheatstone; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Rumford Medal was awarded to Dr. Neil Arnott for the construction of the smokeless fire grate and for other improvements of heat in the warming and ventilation of apartments. Read a letter from the President addressed to the Treasurer, who was requested to reply on behalf of Council. Letter from Benjamin Oliveira, 8 Upper Hyde Park Street, 6 November 1854, to William Sharpey, Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: approving the idea of contributing £50 in the years 1855 and 1856, for the construction of photographic equipment to record sunspots; he hopes that the results obtained will be as important as Sir John Herschel anticipates. List of salaries to be paid to Officers and members of Staff of the Royal Society. List of bills for payment, for printing, engraving, and for other services. Application from Mr. West to copy certain engravings from books held in the Library was acceded to . Resolved that part of the premium paid by the Society for insurance against fire in the Office of the Royal Exchange Assurance Company be transferred to insure £1,000 value of Philosophical Transactions in the store-rooms of the Society's printer.
