DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey; Thomas Bell; Sir Benjamin Collons Brodie; Warren De La Rue; John Miers; James Paget; the Reverend Baden Powell; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The President and new Members of Council made and subscribed to the Declaration in lieu of the Oath. Appointment of Vice-Presidents. Reappointment of the Library Committee, with list of members, terms of reference, and budget. John Tyndall appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture for the present session, on the nature of the force by which bodies are repelled from the poles of a magnet. Letter from Captain H.C. Owen, Board of Trade Department of Science and Art, Marlborough House, London, 14 December 1854, to Lord Wrottesley, President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: requesting the cooperation of Council in arrangements for a fit representation of arts and industry at the approaching Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855, and asking that Council appoint a committee for the purpose; a committee was appointed, with a full list of membership. Professor Willis added to the Committee on Dr. Scheutz's Calculating Machine.
