DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Thomas Bell; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; Charles Darwin; Warren De La Rue; Thomas Henry Huxley; John Miers; James Paget; the Reverend Baden Powell; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Foreign Secretary reported that there were five vacancies on the list of Foreign Members: a list to be drawn up from which to select replacements at the meeting of 19 April. On 19 April Council would also take into consideration the award of Royal Society Medals and the list of candidates for the Fellowship, and that these notices should be given in the summons. Lord Hatherton requested an extension for admission into the Fellowship, granted. Sir William Symonds requested permission to withdraw from the Royal Society, granted. Letters from J.J. Lister and Charles Darwin, applying for arrears in the Philosophical Transactions for the last four years, granted. Letter from Dr. Martin Barry on behalf of Dr. Keber of Insterburg, requesting permission to have impressions of two plates from his 1840 paper on the corpuscules of the blood, acceded to.
