DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; John Miers; James Paget; the Reverend Baden Powell; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; William Tite; Charles Wheatstone; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report from the Government Grant Committee, full text entered into the minutes: including applications for grants and recommendations of the Committee to Council; the grants recommended were approved. Letter from Edward W. Tuson explaining why he had not paid his annual subscription and requesting to be readmitted to the Royal Society. Applications from the Reverend E. Whitley, the Reverend J. F. Denham, and the Reverend Hugh Hughes, for the appointment of the Fairchild Lectureship following the death of the incumbent, the Reverend J. Ellis: Council having been informed by Sir Henry Ellis, brother of the deceased, that a lecture had been prepared for that year, it was decided that the curate of the Reverend Ellis should deliver the lecture. Resolved that a committee be appointed to report to Council on the best course to be adopted for the future of the Fairchild Lectures. List of bills for payment, for printing and binding. An application was received from John Jesse for arrears of the Philosophical Transactions for the last five years, granted.
