DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey; Thomas Bell; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; Thomas Henry Huxley; John Miers; James Paget; the Reverend Baden Powell; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; William Tite; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the Government Grant Committe, full text entered into the minutes: Reporting the receipt of £1,000 from Government, listing applicants for awards; and after discussion recommending grants to be awarded, with some applications postponed; the report was received and grants confirmed. Resolved that the Lord Bishop of Oxford deliver the Fairchild Lecture for the ensuing year. Colonel Boileau applied for arrears of Philosophical Transactions for five years, granted. Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie communicated a letter from Henry Foster Baxter, noting that on applying for permission to see three of his papers lodged in the archives, two could not be found: Dr. Sharpey explained that the papers had been sent to a referee who had not returned them; application had been made to the referee, who recovered one, but two remained missing; resolved that the Secretary should communicate with him again.
