DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; Charles Darwin; William Fairbairn; John Miers; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; James Paget, Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; John Stenhouse; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New Members of Council made and subscribed to the Declaration in lieu of the Oath. Reappointment of the Library Committee, with a list of members and budget. Professor William Thomson of Glasgow was appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture on researches on the electro-dynamic qualities of metals. The President gave notice that the Government Grant Committee would be reappointed at the next meeting of Council. Letter from the referee of Mr. Baxter's papers, explaining that in changing his residence the manuscripts could not be found: the Secretary to relay these circumstances to Mr. Baxter and express the regret of Council. Dr. Allen Thomson requested parts of the Philosophical Transactions, granted. The sum of £25 from the Donation Fund was granted to George Rainey for researches on the development of the Cystic entozoa. The gift of a volume of Thomas Young's correspondence, from Mrs. Young was announced and thanks were returned. Letter from Robert William Siever explaining the circumstances of his non-payment of his annual contribution, asking to be readmitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
