DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; John Miers; James Paget; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; John Stenhouse; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from Robert Mallet stating that he had applied to the Secretary of War for a grant to meet the expenses of his proposed experiments and this had bee acceded to, thanking President and Council. Letter from the Ambassador of France, Albert Gate House, 23 January 1856, to Samuel Hunter Christie, full text [in French] entered into the minutes: requesting information on the Royal Society, its administration and activities. Letter from William Sharpey, the Royal Society, Somerset House, to the French Ambassador [Jean Gilbert Victor Fialin, duc de Persigny], full text entered into the minutes: sending copies of the Charter and Statutes, list of Fellows, and financial accounts from Proceedings; noting the Royal Society's publications and awards, including grant information. Resolved that the Philosophical Transactions should be presented to the Academy of Sciences, Madrid.
