Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll; Neil Arnott; Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; James Challis; Charles Darwin; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; William Fairbairn; John Miers; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; James Paget; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; John Stenhouse; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. List of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society, from which two would be selected. Sir Roderick Murchison applied for volumes of the Philosophical Transactions from 1851, on behalf of the Library of the Musem of Practical Geology, granted. Selection of candidates for Fellowship of the Royal Society was considered and adjourned to the next meeting.
