Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Rear-Admiral Frederick William Beechey; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; Charles Darwin; John Miers; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; James Paget; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; John Stenhouse; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer presented an extract of the minutes of the Acton Estate Committee, full text entered into the minutes: resolved that the Seal of the Royal Society be affixed to a power of attorney authorising Edward Sabine and others to act in respect of a claim of the Royal Society regarding the Acton lands. Application from the Ecole des Mines of Paris for volumes of the Proceedings, the request granted. The Academy of Lausanne was placed on the list of institutions entitled to receive the Proceedings. Letter from James Wilson, Treasury Chambers, 9 June 1856, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: transmitting a copy of a letter to the Senate of the University of London relating to the accommodation of the Royal Society at Burlington House, upon which both parties are agreed, but the Treasury consider it desirable to have a formal consent from the Senate; enclosure letter, James Wilson, Treasury, 3 June 1856, to the Senate of the University of London, full text entered into the minutes; describing proposed arrangements for Burlington House; resolved that the proposed arrangement be accepted by the Royal Society and the correspondence circulated to Fellows. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: list of candidates proposed and seconded, with brief citations.
