DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; Arthur Cayley; Reverend James Challis; John Miers; William Allen Miller; General Edward Sabine; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolutions of the Government Grant Committee, that all purchased instruments should be considered the property of the Royal Society, to be placed in a museum for their safe custody, and that drawings should be treated similarly: approved on the understanding that the Royal Society would be acting as Trustees for the Public. The Treasurer reported on funds held in trust for the Croonian Lectures, with an annexed account of the Fund: resolved that an office copy of the will of Lady Mary Sadleir should be procured, and if the Parish of St. Mary-le-Strand is entitled to the balance, it should be given to the Minister for the parish poor. £50 to be given from the Donation Fund for the mounting of the Durham Equatorial provided a satisfactory application is made by Professor Chevallier. Letters from Edward Hawkins and from Sir John Hall resigning from the Fellowship, both accepted.
