DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; William Fairbairn; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Hopkins; William Allen Miller; the Reverend Bartholomew Price; General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; John Stenhouse; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The President announced that he had communicated to Lord Palmerston the resolutions of the Committee on measures to be adopted by Government or Parliament to improve science. Thomas James Hux was selected as the Society's Porter. In response to correspondence with Dr. Lloyd of Dublin, Royal Society Proceedings were to be exchanged with equivalent journals from the Royal Irish Academy. Request from Mr. Edwards of the Free Library of Manchester for copies from four copper plates from Sir Humphry Davy's paper on Herculaneum manuscripts, the request acceded to.
