DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; Arthur Farre; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; Lyon Playfair; the Reverend Bartholomew Price; Sir James Clark Ross; General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A sum of £50 to be applied for the purchase of china, glass and other articles required for conversational meetings of the Royal Society. An application was to be made to Government for an iron door to be fitted to the fire-proof closet in Storeroom 3, to protect the Standards of Length and Weight. Letter from Mr. Hopkins on experiments on the mean temperature of the Earth recommended to be undertaken by Mr. Palliser's expedition to Western Canada, referred to the Committe created for the purpose. List of candidates selected for Fellowship, to be recommended to the Royal Society at the next election.
