DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; Arthur Farre; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; Lyon Playfair; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the Government Grant Committee in the form of minutes of a meeting of 3 July 1857, full text entered into the minutes: with a list of applicants for grants, and after discussion, a list of grant awards to be recommended to Council; letters of progress on previous grants were read; the report was adopted by Council. Report of the Committee appointed to consider Captain McClintock's letter, full text entered into the minutes: noting steps taken in support of scientific observation on the expedition, including the supply of a memorandum by General Sabine on magnetic instruments, Admiral Fitzroy's instructions for meteorological observations, Dr. Hookers' advice and appliances for botanical collections, including Ward's cases, Professor Stokes's note on observation of atmospheric phenomena, and the instruction of Lieutenant W.R. Hobson and Captain Allen Young at Kew Observatory. Application from Professor Murchison on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society for permission to hold evening meetings in the Great Hall at Burlington House, granted. List of bills for payment to Fox and to Shoolbred and Company. Resolved that the index to the Philosophical Transactions to be supplied to the Library of the Royal Medical and Churigical Society. Mr. Adams applied for impressions from two copper plates in the Philosophical Transactions, granted. Mr. Prestwich and Dr. Tweedie to be allowed arrears of the Philosophical Transactions for the last five years. Mr. Boole was granted an extension of time for admission to the Fellowship. Michel Eugene Chevreul was added to the list of candidates for Royal Society Medals.
