DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Order from John George Shawe, House of Lords, 13 July 1857, full text entered into the minutes: requesting detailed returns on sums granted through the year to the Royal Society and others; the request had been complied with. Letters from various authors in the War Department, from Lord Panmure, and from the Office of Works, largely on room use. Report of the sub-committee to consider the claims of the executors of Mr. Bate for remuneration in services rendered to the Excise Committee: the committee found that with new documents presented, the claim was justified and the sum should be paid by the Government to the executors. Letters from John Phillips, Trinity College, Dublin, 27 August 1857 and 26 September 1857, to the Secretaries of the Royal Society, full text of each entered into the minutes: transmitting resolutions, including the creation of a joint committee on the subject of terrestrial magnetism. Applications from the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences, the Naturewissenschlaftlicher Verein of Hamburg, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at Boston and fom the Royal Academy of Amsterdam, for publications or exchanges. Sir Proby Cautley, Dr. Falconer and Thomas Oldham were allowed five years' arrears of Philosophical Transactions. Letter from Mr. Fox requesting that £10 of the £15 discount deducted from his account be repaid, acceded to. Financial statement from the Treasurer on the Society's receipts and expenditure, with a review of the likely changes in income in Fellowship subscriptions, rents, publishing, and legacies.
