DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; George Peacock, the Very Reverend Dean of Ely; Arthur Farre; William Fairbairn; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Hopkins; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; the Treasurer and Vice-President, General Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Charles Few attended the meeting to give explanations of the state of the Stevenson and Handley bequests, and the Royal Society's property at Acton: Few was requested to ascertain the value of the Handley bequest and to take steps for its security. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the various candidates were discussed. Kew Observatory was placed on the list of institutions entitled to receive Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings.
