Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; William Benjamin Carpenter; Arthur Cayley; Arthur Farre; William Robert Grove; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; Lyon Playfair; General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair..

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. List of salaries and wages to be paid to Officers and Staff of the Royal Society. List of bills for payment, for printing, engraving and for other services. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Royal Society for service in the ensuing year. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: a Royal Medal to be awarded to Dr. Edward Frankland, including for work on the organic radicals of the alcohols; a Royal Medal to Dr. John Lindley for his work on all branches of scientific botany; the Copley Medal to be awarded to Michel Eugene Chevreul, for researches in organic chemistry, and the contrast of colours; The corporate seal of the Royal Society to be attached to a power of attorney to enable the sale of £1500 of 3 per cent stock.
