DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Busk; Edward Frankland; John Peter Gassiot; William Robert Grove; Philip Hardwick; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Leonard Horner; James Prescott Joule; William Hallowes Miller; Richard Owen; John Percy; General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Charles Wheatstone; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The President reported that Lord Clarendon' reply to his letter stated that he would have pleasure in furnishing Robert Mallet with documents to facilitate his proceedings, so far as the suspension of relations with the Government of Naples allowed him to do. Letter from Professor Haidinger expressing thanks for his election as a Foreign Member. The delivery of the Bakerian Lecture by Mr, Gassiot was fixed for 4 March. Letter from E. Hammond, Foreign Office, 18 January 1858, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: an expedition under Captain Hawkins is about to proceed to Vancouver's Island, in conjunction with a similar expedition by the United States for the purpose of fixing boundaries under the 1846 Treaty; Lord Clarendon requested suggestions from the Royal Society to guide the work of the expedition's naturalist, geologist, and two astronomers; a committee was formed for the purpose. A donation of two guineas was made to the parochial schools of Mablethorpe. Erasmus Wilson applied for five years' of arrears of the Philosophical Transactions, granted, The report of the Library Committee was considered and adopted, with £250 being allocated for the work suggested next year; Dr. Percy was nominated a member of the Library Committee.
