DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Busk; Edward Frankland; John Peter Gassiot; Philip Hardwick; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Leonard Horner; William Hallowes Miller; Richard Owen; William Sharpey; Archibald Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; Charles Wheatstone; the President, John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. The Reverend Professor Walker was appointed Fairchild Lecturer for the ensuing year. Letter from Thomas Winter of Grantham, presenting a statuette of Isaac Newton, a reduced copy by Mr. Theed, thanks were returned. Letter from Eaton Hodgkinson requesting permission to reprint part of his paper on the strength of pillars of cast iron, granted. Mr. Borrer applied for arrears of the Philosophical Transactions, granted. The Secretary stated that the portrait of John MacCulloch had beeen beqeathed to the Society by his widow, and had been received.
