DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Benjamin Collins Brodie; Charles Brooke; Samuel Hunter Christie; Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; John Peter Gassiot; Colonel Edward Sabine; Captain William Henry Smyth; Edward Solly; William Spence; Nathaniel Wallich; the President, William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse, in the chair.

The Presidents of the Linnean, Geological, Royal Astronomical and Chemical Societies having been invited to the meeting, there were also present as representatives: Robert Brown, President of the Linnean Society, Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny, President of the Chemical Society, and William Hopkins, President of the Geological Society.

Among matters discussed or noted: the resolution of Council of the Royal Society calling a meeting on the juxtaposition of learned societies was read, full text entered into the minutes. The Earl of Rosse presented a communication received from certain Fellows of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: proposing that learned societies should be accommodated together, with their libraries, under one roof; noting the advantages of such an arangement and submitting that Government should be approached to exchange the present separate accommodations for learned societies for one of equivalent magnitude, allowing the bringing together of societies, this being more conducive to the advancement of Science. The communication was discussed and resolutions made supporting the bringing together of accommodation; the Presidents of the four Chartered Societies to take steps to ascertain support among their memberships for such a move. A copy of the resolutions to be sent to the four Presidents.
