DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; James Booth; Benjamin Collins Brodie; Charles Brooke; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Peter Gassiot; Thomas Graham; Henry Bence Jones; George Newport; William Sharpey; Nathaniel Wallich; John Wrottesley, 2nd BaronWrottesley; the Treasurer and Vice-President, Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Lord Wrottesley made and subscribed to the declation in lieu of the oath as a new Member of Council. Extract of a letter from Otto Struve, 15/3 January 1853, to [George Biddell Airy], the Astronomer Royal, full text entered into the minutes: expressing satisfaction that the British Association had recommended to the Society new research on the irradiation of the Huygens telescope and its relation to his research on Saturn's rings. The seat of the Royal Society was affixed to the deed of sale of three acres of the Acton Estate to the London and Northern Junction Railway Company. On the proposition made by the Government of the United States for cojoint researches in ocean meteorology and hydrography referred to Council of the Royal Society, Lord Wrottesley informed Council that the matter was being taken up by the Parliamentary Committee of the British Association who would urge it the the attention of Government; Council expressed approval. Lord Granville was granted an extension to his admission to the Fellowship. An inspection of the Signature Book [Charter Book] noted that many pages had been damaged and early signatures almost wholly effaced: the book to be kept in the Council Room, not the Meeting Room, and not removed except when required for signatures.
