DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Benjamin Collins Brodie; James Booth; Charles Brooke; Samuel Hunter Christie; William Hopkins; Henry Bence Jones; George Newport; Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Ellison Portlock; Colonel Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; Captain William Henry Smyth; William Spence; Nathaniel Wallich; John Wrottesley, 2nd BaronWrottesley; the President, William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Brodie moved that in adjudication of the Royal Medals, preference should be given to subjects previously prescribed and that medals should be given for original scientific research only: the motion was seconded, before being withdrawn after discussion. List of members of the committee or recommendation for the Government Grant for the next three years. Letter from Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen, Prussia House, 27 April 1853, to the Earl of Rosse, President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: Baron Humboldt has laid before his King a memoir on the importance of the mission of H.H. and Adolphus Schlagentweit to the Himalayas; Bunsen gives some background information on the expedition, including its magnetic observations; the King would be happy to place £200 at the disposal of the Royal Society if an expedition might be considered; resolved that the letter should be sent to the Directors of the East India Company, with the strong opinion of the President in support of completing the investigation interrupted by the death of Captain Elliott. Resolved that the Officers be authorised to take necessary steps to complete the Newton Collection bequeathed by the late Reverend Charles Turnor. Read a letter by Mr. Baxter on the subject of his paper.
