Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; James Booth; Charles Brooke; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Peter Gassiot; Thomas Graham; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Hopkins; Henry Bence Jones; George Newport; Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Ellison Portlock; William Sharpey; Admiral William Henry Smyth; William Spence; Nathaniel Wallich; John Wrottesley, 2nd BaronWrottesley; the Vice-President and Treasurer, Colonel Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from Colonel Charles Grey, Osborne, 7 May 1853, to the Earl of Rosse, full text entered into the minutes: he has received commands from Prince Albert, in response to Rosse's letter to Colonel Phipps, approving of the changes to regulations governing the Royal Medals. Plan for the adjudication of Royal Medals, full text entered into the minutes. Adjudication of Royal Medals: list of candidates proposed and seconded, including the nomination of Charles Darwin for a Royal Medal. Letter from John Phillips, Queen Street Place, Southwark Bridge, 28 May 1853, to the President and Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: it had been reported to Council of the British Association that the President had communicated a paper by Mr. Welsh to the Royal Society; in the event that it is published, the Association would like 500 additional copies to distribute to members; resolved that 500 separate copies should be printed and presented to the British Association.
