DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Burrows; Heinrich Debus; Peter Martin Duncan; George Carey Foster; Francis Galton; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Huggins; George Murray Humphry; John Gwyn Jeffreys; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; Charles William Siemens; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer and Vice-President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Francis Galton made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath, as a new member of Council. Resolved that part of Chapter III Section 6 of the Statutes should be repealed, on failure of payment of subscriptions, with the draft of a replacement statement, full text entered into the minutes. The Treasurer reported on an inspection of the contents of the iron safe, including charters, documents relating to property, and the collection of medals, presenting fair copies of lists: these have been placed in the iron chest the keys of which he has custody. Letter from Professor Angstrom returning thanks for his election as a Foreign Member. Letter from S. Carter offering a bust in plaster of Sir Francis Ronalds, accepted with thanks. Letter from W.E. Steele, Royal Dublin Society, to Kildare Street, 17 November 1870, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, London, full text entered into the minutes: stating that the Royal Society's President and Secretaries were now ex officio honorary members of the Royal Dublin Society; acknowledgement to be made. The communication from the British Association on Kew Observatory to be referred to a committee created for the purpose. In the absence of Mr. Gassiot, Dr. Sharpey gave notice of his proposed motion on nominating standing scientific committees, as formerly, and writing to members of past committees requesting their opinions. Dr. Hooker gave notice that he would move that Council give notice to the resolution on nominating to the office of President. List of bills for payment for lithography and paper.
