DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Currey; Warren de La Rue; William Henry Flower; William Huggins; John Gwyn Jeffreys; John Marshall; Augustus Matthiessen; William Allen Miller; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; Archibald Smith; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Alexander William Williamson; the President, General Sir Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. A grant of £50 for an applicant to the Scientific Relief Fund suggested by the President of the Royal Astronomical Society, approved. Minute of the Scientific Relief Committee recommending the investment of a £200 balance in stock, the Treasurer authorised to do so. Report of the Government Grant Committee in the form of minutes of the meeting of 16 February 1870, full text entered into the minutes: lists of applications received and those approved, endorsed by Council. A committee formed to consider the application of Mr. Lockyer, on procuring a large telescope. Leave granted to Professor Tyndall to use and republish the woodblocks and copper plates from his paper on diamagnetism. Report of the Library Committee on grants of journals to institutions. £25 from the Donation Fund to be awarded to Dr. Carpenter for the purchase of a specimen of Pentacrinus Caput Medusa, to investigate its anatomy with Dr. Wyville Thomson. Grant of volumes and parts of the Philosophical Transactions to Joseph Bancroft Reade, to complete a set for presentation to the Royal Microscopical Society. £100 from the Donation Fund to be granted to Mr. Edward Waller for exploring the sea-bed by dredge on the south western coast of Ireland, in continuation of last year's work in the steam vessel Porcupine. Leave granted to Mr. B.E. Broadhurst to copy his paper on the repair of tendons. List of bills for payment, for lithography, paper and for other expenses.
