Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Burrows; Heinrich Debus; Peter Martin Duncan; George Carey Foster; Francis Galton; John Peter Gassiot; Joseph Dalton Hooker; William Huggins; George Murray Humphry; John Gwyn Jeffreys; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; Charles William Siemens; Henry John Stephen Smith; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Alexander William Williamson; the President, General Sir Edward Sabine, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. List of President, Officers and Fellows nominated to serve on Council for the ensuing year. Nomination of auditors for the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Julius Robert Mayer; Royal Medals awarded to Dr. John Stenhouse and to Dr. George Busk. List of Officers and staff for payment of salaries and wages. List of bills for payment, for colouring plates and for housecleaning.
