Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Correspondence: letter from Il Sindaco di Modena, 27 September 1872, to the President of the Royal Society; letter from George Biddell Airy, 7 October 1872, to Allo Sindaco di Modena; letter from Tavellini, Il Sindaco di Modena, 12 October 1872, to George Biddell Airy, Royal Observatory, London; letter from George Biddell Airy, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 21 October 1872, to Al Signor Sindaco di Modena, full text entered into the minutes; on Lodovico Antonio Muratori celebrations and a request for Royal Society representation, concluding with an authenticated record of Muratori's election as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society being sent. Letter from the Foreign Office with enclosures on the erection of a self-registering tide-gauge in Heliogoland, inquiring if Council wished to modify previous objections to the scheme: referred to the committee which reported on the original application. Letter from George Graham, Registrar-General, General Registry Office, Somerset House, 18 September 1872, to the Secretary, Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: noting that Mr. Glaisher has supplied meteorological observations for publication in the Registrar's reports, but that the Meteorological Committee of the Royal Society might supply similar information, thereby rendering Glaisher's continued employment unnecessary; requesting confirmation; the reply to be that the observations were supplied free of charge by the Astronomer Royal and information required from the Meteorological Committee should be sought from the Board of Trade. Letter from George Biddell Airy, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 19 October 1872, to George Gabriel Stokes, Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: he has reason to expect that once financial arrangements are in place from Parliament, photographic observation of the Sun will commence at Greenwich, and he requests the loan of the photo-heliograph from Kew Observatory, noting the concurrence of Warren de La Rue, request agreed. Correspondence: letter from Few and Company, Covent Garden, 1 July 1872, to Walter White; letter from D. Smith Son and Oakley, 10 Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, 22 July 1872, to Walter White, Royal Socety, Burlington House; Few and Company, Covent Garden, 23 October 1872, to Walter White, full text entered into the minutes: the North and South Western Junction Railway Company wish to buy land at Acton to construct a subway, plans enclosed, the value calculated at £75; this advice from the Society's solicitor and surveyor accepted, the fees to be paid by the railway company. The Treasurer reported the decease of Miss Handley, last survivor in the Handley bequest, Few and Company instructed to take necessary steps in the will. Thursday 12 June 1873 appointed as the day for Annual elections of Fellows. The Treasurer reported that a spring had been fitted to the standard yard case, by Troughton and Sims. Application from William Lawrence, photographer to the Dublin Exhibition, to take photographs of portraits of Sir Robert Southwell and Sir Hans Sloane, granted. Permission granted to Professor Crace-Calvert to copy his two recent papers, now in the archives. Grant of £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund, to an applicant, approved. The Foreign Secretary reported the death of Charles Eugene Delauney. Consideration of nominations of Fellows to the new Council, further proceedings at the next meeting. Adjudication of Royal Society medals discussed and adjourned. List of bills for payment, for printing, lithography and for other expenses.
