Commencing with a list of Council members present: George James Allman; John Ball; George Busk; Heinrich Debus; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the Treasurer and Vice-President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Vernon Lushington, Admiralty, 22 August 1872, to William Sharpey, Secretary of the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: HMS Challenger is intended to leave on its voyage by the end of November and the Lords of the Admiralty request the precise objects of research and areas of the ocean for investigation, in order to frame instructions for the officer in command. Report of the Circumnavigation Committee on the scientific research of HMS Challenger, full text entered into the minutes: on the ocean areas of the globe for particular investigation, providing a route for the expediton, with scentific research objectives grouped under headings. 1. Physical observations. 2. Chemical observations. 3. Botanical observations. 4. Zoological observations. 5. Concluding observations. The Committee report to be transmitted to the Secretary of the Admiralty, with a covering letter, full text entered into the minutes. Grant of £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund for an applicant, approved. Arthur Gamgee granted an extension of time for admission into the Fellowship. Leave granted to Mr. Lockyer to reprint his papers published by the Society and to have the use of woodblocks. Application from the Royal School of Naval Architecture to reproduce Professor Rankine's paper on waves in liquids, granted. Application from Dr. Pettigrew to withdraw a paper from the archives: Pettigrew to be informed that he may copy the item
