DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: George James Allman; Heinrich Debus; George Carey Foster; Francis Galton; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Hallowes Miller; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the President, Sir George Biddell Airy, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Reprt of the Treasurer's accounts. Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton elected a Trustee of the Sir John Soane Museum. Mr. Gassiot appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. Letter from Robert Hall, Admiralty, 27 November 1872, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: giving thanks for the communication on the research objectives of HMS Challenger and inviting President and Council, and members of the Circumnavigation Committee, to inspect the vessel at Sheerness; a saloon carriage would be ordered to take the party by rail from Victorian Station on 6 December, to be met by the naval hydrographer. The Secretary noted a request from the Royal Academy to erect an arcade, referred to the House Committee: the committee recommended acceding to Mr. Smirke's proposal, on conditions including secure lighting for the basement and ground floor, and subject to the consent of the Linnean Society. Report of the Kew Committee was presented and ordered to be printed in Proceedings.
