Commencing with a list of Council members present: George James Allman; George Busk; Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Fergusson; Thomas Archer Hirst; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallowes Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Philip Lutley Sclater; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the President, Sir George Biddell Airy, in the chair; followed by William Spottiswoode, Treasurer and Vice-President, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of the Reverend Canon Sedgwick and Hugo Von Mohl. Report of the Government Grant Committee in the form of minutes of the meeting of 13 February 1873, full text entered into the minutes: Professor Carey Foster's motion on information required by applicants, passed in an amended form; letter from Dr. Andrews returning the unexpended part of his grant owing to ill-health; letter from Mr. Armstrong explaining delays in his experiments; list of applications for grants, with a list of recommendations, following discussion. The Treasurer stated that Mr Galloway's grant of £12 from the Donation Fund would not be required in view of the £50 voted by from the Government Grant. Letter from Mr. Rogers Field referred to Professor Miller. Report of the Library and Catalogue Committee, full text entered into the minutes: progress on the Catalogue of Scientific Papers, changes to regulations for the use of the Library, disposal of surplus publications stock and recommendations for exchanges of journals. Report of the Soiree Committee on arrangements for the event, adopted, with £50 allocated for expenses. Application to be made on behalf of Council to Joseph Dalton Hooker, to nominate him as President. Letter from Henry Rawlinson, President, Royal Geographical Society, 1 Savile Row, Burlington Gardens, 4 February 1873, to Sir George Biddell Airy, President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: on the subject of a North Polar Expedition, refused by Government following a deputation, but Rawlinson hopes that the Royal Society might lead a second, more complete application; enclosing copy letters, Robert Lowe, 11 Downing Street, n.d., to Sir Henry C. Rawlinson; and Henry Rawlinson 13 January 1873, to Robert Lowe, Chancellor of the Exchequer, full text entered into the minutes, the Chancellor noting the expense of the current Challenger Expedition. The Reverend T. Simpson Evans appointed Fairchild Lecturer for the present year. Letter from H.M. Vane, Charity Commission, 8 York Street, St. James's Square, 27 January 1873, to the Secretary, Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: sending a form of application for an order to discharge the Royal Society from the Thomas Fairchild bequest, with instructions and arrangements for the sum of stock; the seal of the Royal Society to be affixed to the forms. The Earl of Rosse appointed to the Bakerian Lecture. Leave granted for the reproduction of illustrations and reprints of papers. Resolved that a list of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society to be drawn up, and a copy of the 1870 list sent to members of Council. List of bills for payment, for printing, engraving and lithography.
