Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; George Busk; Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Fergusson; Thomas Archer Hirst; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallowes Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Philip Lutley Sclater; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Isaac Todhunter; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the President, Sir George Biddell Airy, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Charles Purton Cooper, Dr. Henry Bence Jones, Dr. Edward Latham Ormerod, Professor Richard Partridge, Sir William Tite, and Baron Justus von Liebig. Resolved that four Foreign Members be nominated for election. Letter from Alexander William Williamson, University College, London, 22 March 1873, to William Spottiswoode, full text entered into the minutes: accepting the role of Foreign Secretary. Letter from Dr. B.W. Richardson accepting the Croonian Lecture appointment. Letter from Dr. Bence Jones offering a pedestal for the bust of Michael Faraday, accepted with thanks. The corporate seal was affixed to a power of attorney to allow the Society's bankers to transfer stock for the Fairchild Lecture Fund to the Charity Commissioners. The selection of candidates for election to the Fellowship was considered and adjourned.
