Commencing with a list of Council members present: George James Allman; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; George Busk; Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Fergusson; Thomas Archer Hirst; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallowes Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; Philip Lutley Sclater; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the Treasurer and Vice-President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Lord Justice Bovill. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended at the Anniversary Meeting for service in the ensuing year. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand Helmholtz; Royal Medals awarded to George James Allman and to Henry Enfield Roscoe. Nominations of Jean Baptiste Julien D'Omalius Halloy, Georg Adolph Erman, Asa Gray, F.G.L. Henle, Charles Hermote and Otto Struve for election as Foreign Members confirmed by ballot. The report of the Arctic Committee and its associated memorandum were considered and it was resolved that in the event of a renewed deputation by the Royal Geographical Society to the Government to press for a Polar Expedition, a Royal Society deputation would represent to Royal Society's views on the scientific results to be expected; the deputaion members listed and th eminute to be sent to the Royal Geographical Society. Salaries of Walter White, Assistant Secretary, and H.B. Wheatley, Clerk, to be raised by £50 and £25 respectively. Read a letter from Sir Edward Sabine [no content minuted]. Philosophical Transactions part 1 for 1851 granted to M. van Ryckevorsel. The Royal Society's seal was affixed to a new lease for the estate at Acton, full text of the provisons of the lease entered into the minutes. The Treasure reported that the Lords of the Treasury had applied for a statement of the allotment of the Government Grant, and that the Secretary had intimated that the information was satisfactory. On the occasion of the Anniversary, arrangements were to be made to invite Fellows to the Society's new apartments after dinner, extending the invitation to 'a limited number of ladies', and the necessary intimation to be made on the usual notice for the Anniversary Meeting. List of salaries and wages paid to Officers and staff. List of bills for payment, for books, lithography and for other expenses.
