Commencing with a list of Council members present: George James Allman; George Busk; James Fergusson; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallowes Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Philip Lutley Sclater; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Sir Charles Wheatstone; the President, Sir George Biddell Airy, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Death of Augustus De la Rive. Dr. Allman appointed to the Scientific Relief Fund Committee in place of Dr. Hirst. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to the diplomas of new Foreign Members. Memorial from Council of the Royal Society to H.M. Government, full text entered into the minutes: on the addition of geologists and natural historians to two of five Transit of Venus Expeditions, to Rodriguez and Kerguelen's Land; H.M.S. Challenger would undoubtedly visit the latter, but many years of collecting would be needed to obtain representative marine specimens, and this would be a rare opportunity; with a recommendations on the costs involved. Report of the Kew Committee ordered to be published in the Proceedings.
