Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; John Evans; Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Joseph Prestwich; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Professor Cayley and Dr. Sanderson made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. death of E.H. Starling. With reference to the £25 grant for a new convertible pendulum, this had not been ordered for work at Kew, owing to Colonel Heaviside's obligation to return to India. Letter from Charles Barry, 1 Westminster Chambers, 18 December 1873, to Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: on the need to hire a competent person to manage the system of ventilation and warming at Burlington House by Messrs. Haden and Son; referred to Captain Galton for a report to Council. Letter from the Secretary of the Meteorological Committee in answer to a letter from the War Office, to be forwarded to the Secretary of State. Letter from Few and Company respecting Counsel to be retained in the Handley Bequest case. Minutes of the Acton Estate Committee were read. Letter from Edward N. Clifton, 7 East India Company Avenue, Leadenhall Street, 6 January 1874, to William Spottiswoode, full text entered into the minutes: on an offer to purchase land at Acton; the Treasurer presented a deed of convenyance for Acton land and the seal of the Society was affixed to it. Letter from J.W. Dawson Principal of McGill University, Montreal, requestign to retain magnetic instruments lent soem years ago by Council: the request acceded to, with Dawson requested to furnish Council with a statement of the condition of the instruments. Letter from Dr. Carpenter applying for a grant from the Donation Fund of £25 to be used in construction of experimental apparatus on oceanic circulation, granted. Letter from Dr. Fayrer offering his collection of original drawing of poisonous snakes of India, accepted with thanks. Letter from Asa Gray giving thanks for his election as a Foreign Member. General Strachey moved his resolution for which he gave notice on 30 October, and after discussion, he withdrew the motion. Resolution to create a committee to consider the desirability of making changes to Section 4 Cap. 1 of the Statutes. List of bills for payment, for repairing and regilding pictures, lithography and for other expenses.
