Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; John Evans; Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Joseph Prestwich; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; George Rolleston; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Peter Andreas Hansen. Letter from J.W. Dawson, McGill University, Montreal, 12 March 1874, to George Gabriel Stokes, full text entered into the minutes: thanking the Society for being allowed to retain instruments loaned to Dr. Smallwood, which were a transit instrument and a declinometer, both in need of repair, and loaned via General Sabine and Kew Observatory; the other instruments were purchased by the Canadian Government. A photograph accompanying the report on Brixham Cave was returned to Mr. Pengelly. Letter from William Law, Treasury Chambers, 28 March 1874, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: an additional sum of £546 10s had been allocated to transport scientific staff via Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope to observe the transit of Venus. The President reported that the committee considering the appointment of naturalists for Rodriguez and Kerguelen's Island were not in a position to report, but requested that the committee should appoint directly, without returning to Council, agreed. £30 from the Scientific Relief Fund was placed in the hands of Professor Ramsay, for an applicant. Selection of candidates for the Fellowship was considered and adjourned.
