Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; John Evans; Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; James Clerk Maxwell; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Joseph Prestwich; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; George Rolleston; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Major-General Richard Strachey; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Major Ross requesting the loan of a woodblock from his pyrology paper, approved. List of candidates for Fellowship of the Royal Society to be recommended at the Annual Meeting on 4 June. £100 from the Donation Fund granted to Dr. Dohrn for the use of the Statione Zoologica in Naples, and £50 granted to Dr. Ferrier for his research on the functions of the brain. Dr. Ferrier's paper on localisation of brain function to be the Croonian Lecture. Mr. Lockyer's paper on researches in spectrum analysis to be the Bakerian Lecture. Section 4 Chapter I of the Statutes was repealed and the draft new Statute on privileged members was agreed, full text entered into the minutes. Mr. Maskelyne gave notice that he would raise the issue of personal approaches being made to Fellows by candidates for election to obtain signatures on their certificates. Payment authorised for a bill on bookbinding.
