DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; James Clerk Maxwell; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Joseph Prestwich; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer, William Spottiswoode, in the chair; followed by the Vice-President, General Richard Strachey, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of John Phillips. Report of the Soiree Committee noting attendence at the Conversazione and expenses, and not recommending a second soiree this year. Report of the Library Committee on grants of publications. Letter from Captain Luard applying for a grant of journals for the Library of the Corps of Royal Engineers, granted. Report of the Naturalists' Committee appointing Isaac Bayley Balfour, George Gulliver and Henry H. Slater to the Rodriguez expedition at salaries of £200, with the Reverend A.E. Eaton to Kerguelen Island at a salary of £125, each to receive £25 for equipment costs. Professor Huxley made a statement on arrangements for embarkation and equipment for the expeditions. The Committee for distributing copies of Dr. Klein's book on the lymphatic system had drawn up a list of 97 institutions for presentations. List of names of candidates for consideration in the award of Royal Society Medals. Report of the Brixham Cave Committee in the form of a letter, Joseph Prestwich and George Busk, Geological Society, Burlington House, 13 May 1874, to President and Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: noting the extent and types of the specimens from Brixham Cave, recommending presentation to the British Museum, with the Museum to present any unwanted materials to the Museum of Natural History in Torquay; flints and hammer-stones to be lodged at the Christy Museum; John Evans noted to approve the report although unable to sign it through absence. The Secretary ordered to communicate with the museums involved. The Treasurer reported on money received for the sale of a plot of land at Acton invested in Consols. Leave granted to Mr. H. Lawson to have copies printed from lithographic plates of Dr. Duncan's paper on Actinia. Letter from William Law, Treasury Chambers, 19 May 1874, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: noting that the Commissioners of the Treasury will not insist on the Society insuring Burlington House byuikldings, but would not be able to provide additional accomodation or rebuilding in the event of fire. Mr. Blaikley applied for leave to retouch the portrait of Michael Faraday, granted, provide the face was not touched. List of bills for payment, for printing, lithography and for other expenses.
