Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; Arthur Cayley; John Evans; Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; James Clerk Maxwell; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Joseph Prestwich; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; George Rolleston; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; General Richard Strachey; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Edwin Lankester. List of President, Officers and Fellows to be recommended to the Society for election as Council for the succeeding year, the list to be communicated to the public papers by the Assistant Secretary. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals, with citations: the Copley Medal to be awarded to Louis Pasteur; the Rumford Medal to J. Norman Lockyer; Royal Medals awarded to Henry Clifton Sorby and to William Crawford Williamson. Report of the Gilchrist Trust Committee read and adopted, the awards to be studentships. List of payments of salaries and wages to Officers and Staff of the Royal Society. List of bills for payment, for lithography and for other expenses.
