Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Evans; Thomas Henry Huxley; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Sharpey; Francis Sibson; George Gabriel Stokes; General Richard Strachey; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Auditors of the Treasurer's accounts, reporting a balance of £236 18s. 8d. Deaths of Sir William Jardine, Sir James Ranald Martin, Dr. Edward Smith and General Sir J.M.F. Smith. Mr. Abel to be appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. Letter from Sir Thomas Fairbairn, noting a codicil in the will of Sir William Fairbairn, donating his portrait by Faulkner and offering delivery to the Society; the offer accepted with thanks. Letter from Mr. N. Whitley concerning implements found at Brixham Cave, for inspection by the British Museum; Witley referred to Mr. Franks, the Keeper of the Christy Collection. Leave granted to Mr, Brouncker of Bispham Hall, Wigan, to have copied the portrait of Lord Brouncker. Report of the Kew Committee presented and ordered to be printed in the Proceedings.
