Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; John Evans; Albert Gunther; Daniel Hanbury; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Robert Mallet; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Edmund Alexander Parkes; Lyon Playfair; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of the Reverend Professor Hoppus. Report of the Government Grant Committee in the form of minutes of the meeting of 11 February 1875, full text entered into the minutes: list of applications discussed and grants made with the exception of Dr. Thin's, which was postponed. Minutes of the Soiree Committee were read, one soiree to be held on 7 April, with receptions on 26 May and 23 June. Letter from Charles W. Stronge, Treasury Chambers, 8 February 1875, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: following the letter from G.G. Stokes, the Treasury will submit an estimate to Parliament for £1,000 as a contribution to scientific observation of the total eclipse of the Sun, from Indian Ocean islands and in Siam. Letters from Robert Hall, Admiralty, 25 January and 13 February 1875, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: requesting information on how many observers and what quantity of stores would be required to be conveyed to Siam by Royal Navy ship to observe the solar eclipse; and relaying a telegram from the Senior Officer at Singapore, stating that the vessel Charybdis will be appropriated for the purpose. Letter from Thomas Wolley, Admiralty, 9 February 1875, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: relaying that £250 had been allocated to prepare a manual of scientific enquiry for use by the Arctic Expedition. List of nine candidates to be recommended for election as Foreign Members of the Royal Society. Valuation list of the Society's property for fire insurance, compiled by the Treasurer and John Evans, items to be insured accordingly. Letter from P & D Colnaghi and Company, 14 Pall Mall East, 27 January 1875, to Walter White, the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: offering to purchase the Society's Albrecht Durer letter for £50, declined. Letter from Michael Foster, Trinity College, Cambridge, 30 January 1875, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: relaying a letter from Anton Dohrn and information on £850 raised to assist the Zoological Station at Naples. Letter from Henry Willett, Sub-Wealden Exploration, Arnold House, Brighton, 21 January 1875, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a copy of proceedings with a request for further funding support to drill to 1100 feet; £50 from the Donation Fund granted for the purpose. Parts of the index to Philosophical Transactions granted to the Library of Trinity College, Dublin. Read a letter from Mr. Scott, this referred to the Officers with powers granted to print short statements of the objects of committee meetings. Letter from Robert Mallet, 7 Westminster Chambers, Victoria Street, London, 6 February 1875, to George Gabriel Stokes, Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: presenting a large scale Mercator chart compiled by Mallet and his son, Dr. J.W. Mallet, showing earthquake distribution of the surface of the globe, with background on the work; the map accepted, with thanks. Professor W.G. Adams to be appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture. Bill for payment for coal and coke.
