Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; John Evans; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Robert Mallet; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Lyon Playfair; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of William John Blake, the Reverend Charles Boileau Elliott, William Jory Henwood, the Very Reverend Walter Farquar Hook, Captain Joseph Henry Kay, Sir Charles Locock, Sir William Edmond Logan, the Right Honorable Sir Edward Ryan and Sir Charles Wheatstone. The President stated that he had received a letter from Mr. De La Rue conveying concern at the death of Charles Wheatstone from the President of the Academy of Sciences in Paris. Letter from the Secretary of the Admiralty, with the receipt of £250 for the preparation of the manual of scientific enquiry for the use for the Arctic Expedition. The Treasurer reported the receipt of £1,000 of the Goverenment Grant. Letter from the Secretary of the University Court of the University of Edinburgh: the reply to be that Professor Huxley would take the place of Professor Wyville Thomson at Edinburgh in the ensuing summer, as it was of great importance that Thomson's services continued in the Challenger Expedition. Read Dr. Carpenter's letter on behalf of the Gilchrist Educational Fund Trustees, resolved that Council would not take the responsibility of advising on the selection of lecturers. Letter from Few and Company, 19 Surrey Street, Strand, 16 August 1875, to Walter White, full text entered into the minutes: the assignees of bankruptcy failed to establish a claim on any part of the estate of Henry Dircks and therefore a final decree in favour of the several charities is to be expected. Letter from Few and Company, 2 October 1875, to Walter White, full text entered into the minutes: the seal of the Royal Society is required for the deed of conveyance to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for the site of the proposed parsonage at Acton and other deeds, with a description of the land in question; the Society's seal affixed to the deeds of conveyance and surrender. The award of Royal Society medals was discussed and adjourned. Mr. Mallet announced his wish to retire from Council, citing infirmity of vision. Nomination of Fellows to serve in the new Council, with a list of retiring Council members. Letter from Dr. Klein annoncing that 100 copies of part 2 of his Anatomy of the Lymphatic System had been sent to the Society, expressing his thanks for the Government Grant of £50: 50 copies to be distributed to persons given part 1. Letter from J. Norman Lockyer, the Huygens object-glass to be loaned to him. Letters of thanks from J. Janssen and C. Ludwig for election as Foreign Members. The President mentioned a case to go to the Scientific Relief Committee. Mr. Lankester's request for 25 additional copies of his paper on the development of molluscs, granted. Leave granted to various persons to copy material or borrow wood blocks from the archives. List of bills for payment, for printing, binding and for other expenses.
