Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; John Evans; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Nevil Story Maskelyne; Charles Watkins Merrifield; Lyon Playfair; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson and Lieutenant-Colonel North Ludlow Beamish. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Society for election to serve in the ensuing year: to be communicated to the public papers by the Assistant Secretary. Nomination of auditors for the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals, with citations: the Copley Medal awarded to Professor August Wilhelm Hofmann; Royal Medals awarded to William Crookes and to Thomas Oldham. Leave granted to Dr. Broadbent to copy his paper on the structure of the cerebral hemispheres. List of payments of salaries and wages to Officers and Staff of the Royal Society. Bill for payment, for printing.
