Commencing with a list of Council members present: Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Edward Cardwell, Viscount Cardwell; Warren De La Rue; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Reverend Robert Main; Daniel Oliver; William Pole; Bartholomew Price; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Lord Cardwell made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. The report of the Treasurer, dissenting on Acton railways, approved. Letter from James H. Cole, Treasury Chambers, 4 January 1876, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: notifying the Society, in response to Professor Stokes's letter, that the Treasury has sanctioned the printing of the supplement to the Catalogue of Scientific Papers at public expense. Report of the Library and Catalogue Committee on progress with the Catalogue of Scientific Papers and grants of publications, approved. An honorarium of £25 be given to Mr. H. White for service in connection with the Catalogue. Estimates for fire hoses and fittings from Shand Mason and Company accepted. Letter from J. Winter Jones, British Museum, 18 December 1875, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: accepting the specimens from Rodriguez and Kerguelen, with conditions. Letter from Robert H. Scott, Meterorological Office, 116 Victoria Street, London, 23 December 1875, to George Gabriel Stokes, Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: stating that the Meteorological Committee would take pleasure in furnishing Council with information in response to the Treasury minute, pointing out errors in the Treasury minute; a copy of the letter to be forwarded to the Treasury. Letter from Robert H. Scott, Meterorological Office, 116 Victoria Street, London, 20 January 1876, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a report, copies of which may be forwarded to the Treasury Committee; resolved that this be done and printed in Proceedings. Read a letter from the Reverend Dr. Robinson: £200 granted from the Donation Fund for his experiments on the cup anemometer, on the understanding that the subject is brought before the Government Grant Committee. Dr. Andrews appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture. Mr. Romanes's paper on the locomotor system of Medusae appointed as the Croonian Lecture. Leave granted to various individuals and institutions to reproduce material from the Society's journals. An application from Mr. W. Flight for aid in preparing a history of meterorites 1869-1875 declined. Bill for payment for lithography.
