Commencing with a list of Council members present: Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Edward Cardwell, Viscount Cardwell; Warren De La Rue; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Thomas Wharton Jones; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Reverend Robert Main; Daniel Oliver; William Pole; Bartholomew Price; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Dr. Charles Holland, Dr. Edmund Alexander Parkes, the Earl of Sheffield and the Reverend Thomas Smith Turnbull. The Secretary reported that funds under the will of Edwin Handley had been received and the legacy duty paid: the Treasurer was authorised to invest £5,500 in 3 per cent consols. Candidates for election to the Fellowship were considered and the meeting adjourned.
